Diabetes honeymoon is the phase in type-1 diabetes where the body is still able to produce some amount of insulin to control the blood sugar levels. This period refers to the period following diagnosis of diabetes. This does not indicate that diabetes can be cured. the diabetes honeymoon period can be some days, months or in some cases, years.
Diabetes honeymoon phase is the period body has some capacity to produce the required amount of insulin to support its metabolic activities. In type-1 diabetes, the pancreas itself kills insulin cells by means of islet cells. In this phase, the human body will be in the condition to help itself to produce insulin and regain its health.
When a person starts insulin injection in diabetes honeymoon period, it helps to reduce the pressure on the pancreas to produce insulin. After some period, however, the remaining beta cells will be destroyed and natural production of insulin will be halted. In this phase, the pancreas cannot help blood glucose control anymore.
Insulin doses may hence need to be re-adjusted during this period and it is essential to communicate with your physician during this period. You have to consult your doctor whether you have to take insulin or to stop taking insulin during this period. A balance should be maintained to take insulin to avoid the risk of hypoglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis.
There is no specific rule how long does diabetes honeymoon period last. In some cases, blood glucose levels may resume to normal level in this period.
